A combat veteran who fought actual fascists in World War II just delivered a powerful message against Trump’s mass detention policies.
Robert Hilliard, who turns 101 next week, spoke outside Alligator Alcatraz during a protest by environmental groups and immigration advocates calling for accountability for the environmental harm caused by the facility after the governor announced it was shutting down.
“Next week I’ll be 101 years old,” the local veteran said. “In February 1944 when I was 18 years old I was inducted into the army and what they taught me to do there was to kill people who set up detention camps.
Can you imagine how I felt earlier this year when they announced that one of the future detention camps would be at that same camp landing in Florida?
We have a fascist, a fascist government, that allows innocent people to be put in detention camps and incarcerated.”
His words came as part of protests against the facility, which is now closing after less than a year amid massive public backlash, lawsuits, and reports of inhumane conditions.
One among the few men still around who actually fought in World War II is warning us about what’s happening in America today. He’s seen firsthand what fascism leads to, and he’s having none of it.
