New York Knicks star Jalen Brunson just made it clear that the team is in no way rushing to accept Donald Trump’s invitation to the White House.
“We haven’t discussed it,” the finals MVP, who put up a historic 45-point performance in the decisive Game 5, said. “But as a team, we’ll discuss it, and we’ll cross that bridge when we get to it.”
This comes after Knicks owner James Dolan, one of Trump’s billionaire buddies, already eagerly accepted the invitation on behalf of the team. Dolan has known Trump for 30 years and even hosted him in his box during the NBA Finals, where Trump was loudly booed by fans, and the Knicks lost.
Several Knicks players are known to be less than thrilled with Trump. Forward Josh Hart previously called him a “dumba--” on social media more than once, including a memorable “YESSIR!!!! GET TRUMP’S DUMBA-- OUT THE WHITE HOUSE!!!!!!” after the 2020 election.
The idea of the Knicks becoming the first NBA team to visit Trump since he took office is already causing major tension between the Trump-loving owner and players who aren’t interested in sucking up to perhaps the most hated New Yorker in history.
If the Knicks ultimately turn down Trump’s invitation, it would be yet another sign that even the great honor of being invited to the White House isn’t worth it when its occupant is Donald Trump.
It’s just another example of Trump not really caring about the American people beyond his cronies and suckups seeking yet higher profits by supporting his criminal administration to feed off the government trough.
The overwhelming sentiment of the Knicks players in defiance of the man who signs their paychecks sends a strong message that on the eve of the nation’s 250th anniversary, the country is far afield from where it ought to be for a vast majority of its citizens.
