When Zohran Mamdani won the NYC mayoral race, Republicans and centrist Democrats sneered at him, sure that he would never be able to fulfill his “pie-in-the-sky” promises.

Today, the Rent Guidelines Board – which he appointed – voted to freeze rents on the city’s roughly 1 million rent-stabilized apartments.
“This is a historic victory for New York City tenants,” Mamdani said in a statement after the vote. “After reviewing the data and hearing from New Yorkers across the city, the independent RGB has delivered a freeze on one-year leases, and the first-ever freeze on two- year leases in our city’s history. This is the relief that working people across our city deserve.”
Rents in NYC have risen by 27% since 2020, with the median rent being a shocking $5,125 per month, while landlord operating income has risen by 6.2%.
With the cost of living skyrocketing thanks to Trump’s tariffs and his illegal war with Iran, this is a huge help to New York City’s working families.
