Israel announced on Wednesday evening that it had agreed with Morocco to upgrade their diplomatic relations and open embassies in both countries, following a meeting between the foreign ministers of the two countries in New York, hosted by the United States.
According to a statement issued by the Israeli Foreign Ministry, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar held a trilateral diplomatic summit in New York with Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita, at the invitation of U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz.
The statement added that the three countries reaffirmed their commitment to a series of measures aimed at strengthening relations between Israel and Morocco. These measures include upgrading their respective diplomatic missions to full embassy status and appointing ambassadors.
The Israeli Foreign Ministry described the meeting as a “historic trilateral summit in New York,” bringing together Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar, Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita, and U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz.
During the summit, the three sides agreed on a series of steps designed to strengthen relations between Israel and Morocco and advance the Abraham Accords.
The two countries also agreed to deepen economic and commercial cooperation, with plans to finalize agreements on investment protection and the prevention of double taxation by the end of 2026. They also agreed to expand air connections between the two countries and hold high-level reciprocal visits in the coming months.
